Who Benefits from Braces?
Most children will have their first orthodontic consult around age 7. Orthodontists encourage early intervention because it can greatly reduce treatment time and extensive procedures. Early intervention is typically referred to as Phase I Orthodontics. At Walton Orthodontics, we can help your child get started with Phase I while they still have their baby teeth.
Phase II is typically what most people think of when it comes to orthodontics. This phase begins when a child’s baby teeth have all been replaced with permanent teeth (between ages 11 and 14). About 80% of kids and teens between 11 and 19 will need braces, and many adults have opted for braces as well. In general, anyone with misalignment, spacing issues, gaps, bite issues, or crowding will benefit from this treatment. The timing and length of treatment will depend on the severity of the issues, but most patients who choose traditional treatment will reach success within 1-3 years.
Types of Braces
Everyone has a unique smile, and that means that not every option is right for every patient. Our team will help you or your child find the best solution to correct any dental issues. Here are some options to consider:
Metal Braces
The most common, most affordable, and most tried and true option is traditional metal braces. Made of high-grade stainless steel, traditional braces achieve success over time by using brackets, wires, and bands to gradually shift your teeth into correct alignment In the last 20 years, traditional braces have become much more comfortable.
Ceramic Braces
Many patients want the success and affordability of traditional braces but with a more discreet appearance. Ceramic braces are made of a translucent material that is virtually clear, which makes this option very popular among teens and young adults. Because this option is not true stainless steel, these can be more susceptible to damage, and discoloration.
Clear Aligners
Invisalign®, ClearCorrect, and other similar treatment options are becoming more and more popular every year, with more teens and adults opting in. Made from clear, medical-grade plastic, this aligner system gives patients more control over their treatment, as the aligners can be removed for eating or special engagements, and allow patients to keep their confidence with discreet treatment. Every 8 weeks, you will receive new aligners to gradually move your teeth into place. Most patients reach success within 12 months.
